Security life with Derek May, Quality Manager UK & Ireland for Convergint Technologies UK

What’s your company all about and what makes it stand out?

Convergint is a global systems integrator focused on delivering results for our customers through unparalleled service excellence. As an integrator, Convergint works alongside a global network of partners and manufacturers to design, install, and service security, fire alarm, life safety, audio-visual and building automation solutions for enterprise customers.

With hundreds of Convergint Technology Centres worldwide, we bring global expertise with a personal touch meeting customers where they are and tailoring every solution to their unique needs.

Our number one objective is to be our customers’ best service provider.

What kind of projects do you most enjoy working on?

Every project is a challenge and it’s always good to be pushed out of your comfort zone, to learn new things and work with new colleagues.

It’s always great to work on a project involving the main three disciplines of our work which is access control, video surveillance and intruder alarms.

Which technologies or products are exciting you right now?

“AI” is evolving at a rapid rate in recent years and there have been several major advancements in this especially in regard to video surveillance systems.

Some of the new AI technology can be amazing to observe and integrate, it has transformed video surveillance especially for people detection and elimination of false alarms.

How does NSI certification make a difference to your business?

Having NSI NACOSS Gold certification is a major advantage to us as a company, to achieve that standard we are audited five times per year across UK and Ireland, so far this year we have had our office audit in January and a site technical audit in February.

We receive positive feedback from our customers that they like the fact that one of their installations will be externally audited by the NSI after the installation.

To achieve the Gold Standard there is significant work required from the office audits to the site technical audits. It keeps us in close contact with the NSI, and in regular contact in terms of the standards and modifications or amendments to the standards.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Every day is different and everyday flies by. My months are divided up between the UK and Ireland, so I get to travel a lot and see a variety of different sites and projects. When you enjoy the line of work you are in, these different projects are very interesting to see. To observe what the customer is looking for, what we are delivering and to meet new colleagues. Convergint are a global company, and a lot of our customers are global clients, so they like to have their systems aligned with different parts of their operation.
