TESTED – Ajax KeyPad TouchScreen

by Andy Clutton

The Ajax KeyPad TouchScreen is the latest addition to the growing range of alarm products from this company. Their alarm system approach is notable in that various competitors are now introducing products with a similar appearance and approach to configuration. This is a clearly laid out simple to install and setup product with flexible features.
The KeyPad TouchScreen Jeweller is an indoor unit compatible with Hub 2 and Hub Hybrid controller variants (with firmware OS Malevich 2.16.1 or higher) and the Rex 2 range extender.

Getting started
As for most current products, the manuals along with additional quick-start guides, are downloaded from the Ajax website. A QR code is provided on the included documentation to access the support site.

The keypad was tested on a system using a “Hub 2 Plus” setup. This hub features a pair of SIM sockets for backup communication channels and supports communication with Central Monitoring Stations using a range of protocols or can be managed using the Ajax Pro application. Once this Hub is installed and configured using the Ajax app (available on iOS or Android sites) the keypad is simply an additional device to add.

A momentary power switch on the rear of the keypad activates the unit as batteries are preinstalled. The QR code or 11-character device ID is then entered into the app to add the keypad as a new device.

Hardware
The keypad housing’s backing plate is used to wall-mount the keypad. Four fixing holes are provided with screws and basic wall-fixings supplied. One of these fixing points has break-off lugs to activate the tamper switch should the unit be prised from the wall. A break-out section is contained in the mounting plate for cable access.

The keypad houses six ‘AA’ batteries and these are given an estimated operational life of 1.5 years if used on battery power only; this is based on default settings and up to four interaction per day so for heavier usage, an external power supply may be advisable. A DC supply of 12v with at least 500mA is advised (range 10.5 to 14v). Access to the batteries is by removal of the back cover that is held in place by four small crosshead screws.

The unit has dimensions of 172 x 82 x 26mm and a weight of 327 grammes. It has an operating temperature range from -10°C to +40°C with up to 75% humidity.
