So you have a fear of spiders and you spot one on your car while filling up with petrol – what do you do? You probably wouldn’t do what this driver in Detroit did and try to kill it with a cigarette lighter.
The man is caught on CCTV trying to kill the bug with a naked flame from his lighter – but a blaze quickly erupts and the entire petrol pump catches fire. He grabs a fire extinguisher and puts out the flames before firefighters were called to the scene.
The man escaped serious injury and only one petrol pump was damaged at the station. It is believed the man’s car has also been badly damaged in the blaze. The state of the spider is ‘well done’.
Station employee Susan Adams told Fox2detroit.com: “He was sorry. He said he didn’t know. It is just one of those things that happen – stupidity. Whether it is using a cell phone or static electricity, the smallest spark can cause a gas station fire.”
It’s hoped the damage will be covered by the station’s insurance.
