A new reality for security?

David Scott of Skills for Security looks at the power of VR at the service of the security industry

Every company needs to train its staff to keep them informed, engaged and responsive. However, over the past few years, major obstacles stood along the way of the security sector during our most troubling times.

COVID-19 has propelled many security officers into high-risk front-line roles, with extra responsibilities and many contracting the virus as a result. Security industry workers were listed among the roles most likely to be affected by the virus. Brexit has affected labour throughout the country, particularly within the security industry. Many EU workers have not renewed visas and have returned to the continent, or not seeking work in the UK putting education and training in an even brighter limelight.

Training for security professionals comes in many different guises—which means it also varies substantially in cost. eLearning modules are an example of a cost-effective and scalable solution, but this approach is limited by the lack of tactile and situational exposure. Face-to-face scenario training solves these problems but there is a cost attached to this, and logistically can prove challenging.

Security is just one of many professions ripe for Virtual Reality-based training. And in response to the sectors growing pains and needs, MOONHUB has developed a multi-award-winning Virtual Reality training programme – TITAN. TITAN is based on the years of experience matured with our security partners Corps Security delivering a comprehensive security training solution aimed at equipping security operatives with the tools needed to avoid learning on the job in controlled 360° environments.

MOONHUB’s VR training represents today a turning point, transporting security operatives in low-risk, highly immersive role-playing scenarios that can’t be replicated in classroom or e-learning training. This allows firms to provide their staff with crucial experience dealing with high-stress, life-threatening situations, while also testing trainees’ critical thinking abilities in a controlled environment. In return, firms have access to a rich data analytics dashboard to track their staff’s performance and progress and make data-driven informed decisions to streamline operations.

In a case study with Corps Security, we found that the cost of sending every Corps Security officer to a three-day annual face-to-face training programme would be approximately £800,000 in trainee salaries alone. On top of this cost are venue fees, equipment, transport and instructors.

Our Virtual Reality training solution is a fraction of that cost over the year, fully scalable, and deployable anywhere, anytime. This allows organisations to have an attractive proposition when recruiting new talent and when bidding to win new clients.
