Video system improves student life in London

by Andy Clutton

An end-to-end video surveillance system from IDIS is helping to enhance safety and security at Chapter White City, a recently built student accommodation in West London. The solution, comprising network cameras, recorders, IDIS Center VMS, and all accessories, is eliminating security blind spots, improving image quality, and transforming usability for the 24/7 security team.

Chapter White City, run by residential property management company Greystar, serves students from leading institutions including Imperial College, BPP University and London College of Fashion UAL. On-site amenities include bedrooms and studios, study spaces, a gym, social areas, meeting rooms, a laundry, secure entry, and a 24/7 security team – all designed to appeal to students from across the UK and overseas.

With the incumbent surveillance system providing inadequate coverage and poor image quality, systems integrator Triple Star Fire and Security was asked to provide a complete upgrade and recommended IDIS technology.

Triple Star’s installation team designed a system which more than doubled the number of cameras across the site, delivering HD image capture of every location without increasing operating expenditure. The solution provides full coverage of the building’s exterior, including entrances, storage areas and the car park, as well as internal communal areas including lift lobbies, corridors, and kitchens.

The installation at Chapter White City has already notched up one notable success with a recurring problem of damage to parked vehicles during refuse collection being resolved within days of the system being commissioned thanks to the availability of indisputable video evidence.

External security has been enhanced with 5MP IDIS vandal-resistant IR domes that feature varifocal lenses, true WDR, and IR LED for clear images in all lighting conditions, including night-time coverage up to 30m.

IDIS DirectIP true plug-and-play technology minimised disruption for students and day-to-day operations as it made the installation quick and easy for Triple Star’s engineers, with mutual authentication and seamless compatibility of the H.265 cameras and 32-channel NVRs. H.265 video compression combined with IDIS Intelligent Codec also contributed to the reduced TCO by lessening the data storage burden by approximately 60%.

Jamie Barnfield, Senior Sales Director at IDIS Europe added; “With this end-to-end video surveillance upgrade from IDIS, Greystar now has the assurance that students are better safeguarded, and their personal property protected, giving them the confidence to enjoy their university experience.”
