Trackside collaboration stops thefts

by Andy Clutton

DeterTech has delivered a technical site solution for the Co-op distribution centre in Thurrock, Essex. The implementation hinged on a collaboration with Network Rail to implement a long-term solution that enhances employee safety and deters attempted thefts.

The Co-op’s Thurrock distribution centre shares its perimeter with a railway line, creating a unique security challenge. It made placing a traditional intruder detection system on Co-op land unfeasible due to the limited space between high value assets and the fence line.

Following a site visit it was recommended that DeterTech deploys SmartRecon cameras and sounders on the opposite side of the fence. This would require the agreement of Network Rail but would be to the benefit of both parties. It would alert the railway to illegal trespassing while also providing the Co-op with early warning of possible threats before individuals had reached their site. The proposal was readily signed off by all parties, aided by DeterTech’s ability to install its solutions trackside under its own Safe Work Pack (SWP), using its own Control of Site Safety (COSS) personnel and Personal Track Safety (PTS) trained engineers.

Danny Gent, Logistics Security Lead, Co-op said: “Co-operation and a partnership approach was key to developing this solution, and from day one DeterTech has worked with ourselves and Network Rail to design a solution that benefits all parties, and we have been delighted with the outcome.”

The system is proactively monitored 24/7 in DeterTech’s ARC, identifying anybody who attempts to illegally cross the rail tracks. It feeds back useful intelligence to the Co-op, Network Rail and the police for the enhanced protection of people, assets and facilities.

Since the system has been in operation there has been just one attempted intrusion. Two men attempted entry but quickly departed after triggering the alarms. However, not before operators in DeterTech’s ARC were able to obtain high quality visuals. Still images shared with the police have confirmed them to be known individuals linked to a series of similar crimes.

“We’re very proud of this deterrent-based solution that is bringing significant benefits to the Co-op, to Network Rail and to the police,” says Mark Kubis-Law, Corporate Account Director, DeterTech.
