TESTED – mydome Driveway Alarm Kit

by Andy Clutton

The wireless driveway alarm and sensors are available in the UK from mydome, the supplier and designer of home security products. The double kit (MDD-S1DS2-BUK), which includes two battery powered sensors and the paired midnight square plugin chime, enables the homeowner to get an instant notification as soon as someone enters the perimeter of a monitored area.

The chime forms the central hub of the mydome platform allowing up to 50 devices, including the driveway sensors, doorbells and window/door sensors, to be connected in one system.

Getting started

The chime is powered by plugging the unit into a wall socket, while the wireless sensors are battery powered. The battery compartment is accessed by removing four screws at the back of the device to enable four AA batteries to be inserted once the sunshade is removed. Despite the instructions stating that batteries were not included, four were already in place straight out of the box. Once the four retaining screws are replaced, each should be protected using the four rubber covers provided.

The sensors operate at a reported maximum distance of 600ft from the chime unit, so it is important to keep that in mind on citing the sensors in relation to the chime – especially in the more remote of locations. The scope of the PIR sensor is listed as 16 ft 60°.

The two sensors provided in the kit are fixed in place using a bracket that features a ball joint for positioning the device into the correct angle. It is advised that the unit is not attached to a metal surface as this could block RF signals between the transmitter (sensor) and receiver (chime). It is also recommended that the sensor is mounted under shelter where possible to avoid aging of the plastic housing and at a height of 3 to 4ft above ground level.

Once the batteries are in place it is time to select the desired ringtone and pair the device to the chime. Do not mount the sensor in its operating position until it has been paired as both the sensor and the chime need to be close at hand.

There are five volumes that can be selected, from muted up to 115 dB, and there are 58 ring tones available (users can select a different tone for each sensor/device connected to the chime) from the traditional “bing-bong” through to Xmas tunes and other familiar melodies and sounds. Once this has been selected, pairing is achieved by holding down the volume control button on the chime for five seconds and when the LED indicator flashes, activate the transmitter by waving/moving in front of the sensor. Pairing mode is only active for five seconds, hence the need to do this step before fitting the device into its final outdoor position.

Pairing is required for each transmitter added to the chime. However, in the case of the kit reviewed, the devices were already paired.
