Home Tests TESTED – Johnson Controls IQ PM kit

TESTED – Johnson Controls IQ PM kit

by Andy Clutton

The system is based around a Qolsys IQ Hub branded wall mountable touch panel that can connect to a wide range of alarm devices and home automation products. This supports a wireless Grade 2 alarm system with support for additional technologies and central station monitoring capability.

Recently it was announced that a new integration between the Johnson Controls PowerManage platform and its IQ alarm panels brings an all-in-one intrusion detection solution with hardware, software, service and technical support. Installers and end users can benefit from the system’s simplified installation process, localised data management, remote access and Bluetooth disarming capability.

Getting started

The panel has an external 240v AC to 7v DC external power supply that plugs into the rear of the panel. An optional desk-mount stand is available. The rear mounting plate is detachable for wall mounting and has fixings holes for standard wall-boxes. A tamper break-off point is at the bottom left.

It is necessary to ensure the re-chargeable battery is connected at power up otherwise the panel continually re-boots until it is connected.

The PowerG range of detection devices are configured from the panel and use an appropriate signal path to suit. They simplify the installation and support process and are energy efficient.

The 209-page IQ4Hub installation manual gives instructions for both UL and EN Grade 2 settings.

At first power-up a startup routine can be used to begin the configuration process. PowerG devices can be manually added using a 7-digit code supplied on the device. The IQ4 hub recognises the device type and standard parameters allowing it to be added and then edited to suit the installation.

The JCI cloud PowerManage service is available to dealers to provide remote management and links to central stations.

Hardware

The 7” touch-panel dimensions are 192 x 156 x 28mm with a weight of 480 grammes. The panel has a very responsive touch screen and user-friendly interface. Connections are easily accessible and clearly marked.

The 100dBA external siren is approximately 316 x 303 x 62 mm and is supplied with six large screws and wall fixings. One of these fixing screw positions is for the rear tamper function. Two plastic covers are flipped up to reveal the two top-cover screws. This cover can be held up at 90° or removed for maintenance. A spirit level in the base assists with level mounting.

The fully supervised siren uses 2-way communication for alarming and monitoring. It periodically transmits its status to the alarm system.

It is supplied with both Blue and Red lower strobe section covers with a clear version as an option. Six bright white LEDs provide the strobe alert, and red and green LEDs provide status information. Two battery packs are used to power the siren via a cable adaptor. These are given an expected life of up to eight years in typical use.
