TESTED – Dnake S414 door station

by Andy Clutton

The S414 is an IP65 and IK08 rated compact video door station that includes facial recognition access control along with card, PIN code, Bluetooth, and QR code entry capabilities. It has a 4.3” LCD capacitive touch screen and 2MP dual cameras for capture and verification. Up to 20,000 users are supported, with 20,000 face capacity and 60,000 cards. Four inputs and two alarm outputs are available for device interfacing. Dimensions are 176 x 85 x 29 mm excluding the 2 mm thick mounting plate.

Getting started

The device can be PoE, or 12-volt powered. In normal operation is was seen to draw from around 3.5 watts to 5 watts over PoE when displaying a subject’s image.  By default, it uses DHCP for IP address setting, so can be found by a simple local network address search. The MAC address is given on the unit’s back plate to aid network identification.

A metal mounting plate is supplied for attaching the door station to the wall. Four wall fixings hold it firmly in place with the device mounting onto this with a small security Torx screw holding it at the bottom. As the connections are effectively on the insecure side of any door, care must be taken if used for a perimeter door release; a tamper switch can be enabled to monitor device mounting integrity. Two additional screws are supplied in case an optional recessed electrical mounting box is used.

It is advised that the unit is installed at 1450 to 1550 mm from the ground for capturing a standing human’s face. Optimum facial capture distance is approximately 400 to 500 mm.

A 20-way dual in line connector lead is provided to connect the device to external systems, the connection details are clearly identified on the unit’s rear panel as follows:

The left-hand row is for: +12v, Ground, Inputs 1 to 4, RS485-, RS485+, Ground, & 12V out.

The right-hand row is for: WD1, WD0, 5V out, Ground, NC1, Com1, NO1, NC2, Com, NO2 (relays 1 & 2).

Between the RJ45 and multi-pole connectors is a TF Card slot. This is compatible with micro-SD cards, but no maximum capacity is stated. Wiegand protocol is supported using the WD0 & WD1 for Data0 and Data1 plus Ground connection.

Operation

There is no forced password change on first use, so it is essential to ensure that the default password is changed before installation.

The door station is based on an Android operating system with 1GB RAM and an 8GB ROM. It has icon based on-screen menu options along with its browser-based menu structure. Its display resolution is 480 x 272 pixels which is perfectly adequate for an external display device. The camera resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 pixels, with a default setting of 1280 x 720.

White LED lighting is used for subject illumination and is automatically controlled depending on scene light level. Echo cancellation is used to prevent audio feedback.

Mechanical relays are used with Normally Open and Normally Closed contacts for both.

For testing purposes or to record the main camera stream on an NVR, the device’s RTSP stream can be accessed using the command string rtsp://<account>:<password>@<ipaddress>:8554/ch01 substituting the appropriate naming and IP number for the device.

The Dnake Smart Pro app can be downloaded from the iOS and Android stores for user management and notifications. This can be linked to the Dnake Cloud service for multi-site management.
