Meet the NSI installer – Stephen Murray

by Andy Clutton

Stephen Murray is the head of commercial at Squire Group, based in Leicestershire.

What are your company’s main business activities?

Squire Group comprises two distinct entities: Squire Alarms and Guardian Protection Services. Each company specialises in a unique aspect of the security industry. Squire Alarms, established in 1981, is a leading provider of both domestic and commercial fire alarms, intruder systems, CCTV, access control, and various other technologies. Recently, Squire Alarms has ventured into advanced technology fields through partnerships with brands such as Magos. This collaboration enables the provision of long-range radar detection systems integrated with thermal and infrared cameras, delivering exceptional commercial security solutions. These systems offer detection ranges measured in thousands of meters and real-time tracking on live GPS maps. The focus on threat detection has become increasingly important, particularly as clients are more aware of protestor incursions into sensitive areas. Squire Alarms is proud to be at the forefront of this service among its peers.

Protection Services, on the other hand, is responsible for the labour-providing side of the business, ensuring the effective implementation and management of security solutions. These services include static guarding, mobile patrols, void property inspections, keyholding and alarm response, locks and unlocks, event security, and other tailored security solutions to meet client needs.

What emerging technologies do you see shaping the future of the industry, and how is your company adapting to stay ahead?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionising the security industry, enabling the transformation of almost any camera into smart technology through a simple addon. Our AI solutions are capable of monitoring various aspects, such as ensuring the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is worn on site, maintaining building capacity, and detecting perimeter breaches. This advancement eliminates the need for costly new cameras and bulky Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors, which have become nearly obsolete. The integration of AI can be applied to almost any existing CCTV system, providing an extensive array of measurable data. If there is a specific requirement, it can be achieved through custom coding.

Jacob Squire, currently studying at university, is working on a project with Squire Group that explores the future of our company. It is fascinating to observe his forward-thinking approach and how AI will not only transform the face of security but also enhance back-office functionality.

In what ways does NSI Certification differentiate your company from competitors and enhance your credibility within the industry?

Achieving NSI Gold status signifies that Squire Group is recognised as being at the pinnacle of the security market. This prestigious accreditation is a testament to the years of hard work and dedication put in by our staff. It is a standard that other providers aspire to reach, and it reflects the high level of excellence we have consistently maintained in the industry. We take immense pride in this recognition, as it underscores our commitment to delivering top-tier security solutions and services.

How has the rise of smart/home automation technology influenced your business and the services you offer?

Squire Alarms has been a prominent player in the domestic sector since its inception. We have consistently stayed ahead of the curve by embracing smart technology early on. As a result, we offer our customers a comprehensive range of wireless integrated solutions, including intruder alarms, CCTV, fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, water leak sensors, and more. All these systems are seamlessly linked to a central app, providing the flexibility for either self-monitoring or routing through Monitoring Stations. This approach ensures that our clients benefit from the latest advancements in security technology, enhancing their safety and peace of mind.

In your opinion, what is the most common misconception or myth about the security industry?

It’s true that the traditional image of fire alarms and CCTV has evolved significantly. The old stereotype of the “old man in the grey suit” no longer represents the modern security industry. It’s refreshing to see companies like Squire Alarms, as well as our competitors, adopting a more diversified and dynamic approach. Embracing smart technology and innovative solutions has allowed us to stay ahead of the curve and meet the changing needs of our customers. This shift not only enhances the effectiveness of our security systems but also reflects the forward-thinking nature of the industry.
