How to reduce installation risks

We talk to James Downey of BFT Automation about the state of play regarding automated gate risks and how installer training has changed over the years

Why are there concerns around installer responsibilities when it comes to automated gates and have these problems always been there?

Automated gates are powerful machines that people interact with every day, often without thinking about the risks involved. For this reason, this is not technology that can be installed or maintained by the user, it must be a suitably trained installer.  Thankfully, awareness of this has increased significantly over the last few years.

Installers play a key role in ensuring a system is functional, safe, and installed in accordance with the applicable standards and regulations. The industry has continued to develop its understanding of risk through experience, evolving standards and technological advances and today there is much greater focus on risk assessment, safety devices, documentation, and ongoing maintenance. As a result, installers are expected to demonstrate a higher level of knowledge and accountability than ever before.

What is a typical issue that you have seen?

One of the most common issues is that safety is sometimes considered too late in the project. An installer may inherit an existing gate structure that was never designed with automation in mind. New hazards come to the fore when automation is added.  If those risks are not properly assessed and addressed at this point, it can cause challenges further down the line.

Another issue is insufficient documentation or maintenance planning. A gate may work perfectly on the day it is installed, but without proper records and servicing, safety can deteriorate over time. Many issues can be avoided by following a structured process from the outset, including appropriate risk assessment, testing and documentation.

How can engineers reduce the risk of problems arising?

The first step is to carry out a thorough site-specific risk assessment. No two installations are the same, so engineers should avoid a one-size-fits-all approach.

They should follow relevant standards, select appropriate safety devices, carry out the necessary testing, including force testing where required and maintain clear records of installation.

The right kind of training is essential. Engineers should always work to the latest applicable standards and manufacturer guidance for each installation and engineers who regularly update their knowledge are better equipped to deliver safe and reliable systems. Good communication with customers about maintenance requirements is equally important.
